How to Donate a Tractor-Trailer or Semi Truck

Retiring a rig? Donating a tractor-trailer to support veterans is simpler than selling it — free heavy-haul transport, running or not, any make. Here's how it works.

A tractor-trailer is a serious asset to move on. Selling one privately means listings, tire-kickers, DOT questions, and often a long wait for a buyer who can actually finance a Class 8 rig. Donating it skips all of that — and the proceeds support U.S. veterans. TruckDonations.org, operated by Salute Veterans Inc. (a veteran-founded 501(c)(3) nonprofit), accepts tractor-trailers, semi trucks, and day cabs nationwide, and we handle the heavy-haul transport ourselves.

Every Major Tractor-Trailer Make

We accept tractor-trailers and semi trucks from all the major heavy-duty manufacturers — Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Mack, Volvo, International, Western Star, and the rest. Sleeper cabs and day cabs, single-axle and tandem, with or without a trailer attached. Dry vans, flatbeds, reefers, dump trailers, lowboys, and tankers can come as part of the donation too. Whether you're an owner-operator retiring a single truck or a fleet clearing out older units, the make and configuration almost never stand in the way.

Pickups and Work Trucks, Too — Every Brand

Tractor-trailers are the heavy end of what we take, but the same program handles every lighter truck as well. Ford (F-150 through F-750 and the Super Duty line), Chevrolet and GMC (Silverado, Sierra, and the medium-duty trucks), RAM and Dodge, Toyota, and Nissan — half-ton pickups, three-quarter and one-ton work trucks, box trucks, flatbeds, dump trucks, and tow trucks. If it's a truck with a title, we want to hear about it.

Running or Not — We Arrange the Haul

A tractor-trailer doesn't have to run, roll, or pass inspection to be donated. We accept rigs with blown engines, bad transmissions, no air pressure, dead batteries, failed DOT inspections, and trucks that have been parked in a yard for years. Because we arrange and pay for the appropriate heavy-haul transport ourselves, you don't need to get the truck running or move it — we bring the equipment to wherever it sits, from an interstate truck stop to a back-lot fleet yard.

Is a Tractor-Trailer Donation Tax-Deductible?

Yes. Salute Veterans Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit (Tax ID 84-2016237), so your truck donation qualifies for a federal tax deduction. Your deduction is generally the amount the truck sells for at auction — and because Class 8 trucks and trailers often sell well above $500, your receipt will typically include IRS Form 1098-C showing the gross sale amount the IRS expects on your return. If you're donating a truck owned by a business, the tax treatment differs from a personal vehicle; our guide on donating a business or commercial truck walks through it. Always check with your tax advisor about your specific situation.

Commercial Titles, Liens, and Fleet Paperwork

Heavy trucks come with paperwork that pickups don't — lien releases, fleet and IRP documentation, multi-owner and company-held titles. We handle the title-transfer side as a routine part of intake. If the truck is still financed, the lien has to be cleared first, and we can walk you through that. Lost title, or one still in the company's name? Call us — these are situations we work through regularly.

Where Your Donation Goes

After standard transport and auction costs are covered, the net proceeds from your tractor-trailer go to Salute Veterans Inc. — funding veteran employment programs, transition support, and the public resources we operate for the veteran community nationwide. A rig that's been sitting becomes real support for those who served.
